Summer 2012 News
Toddler - Preschool
Summer at the Day School is in full swing.  We have just completed our cards for our dads and enjoyed playing games, singing and signing Happy Father’s Day to the tune of Happy Birthday.  Every day we play a Composer listening game.  The children listen to a selection and say who composed it and relate facts and trivia about the composer and his music.  Mrs. Leak is presenting the Intensive Phonics computer instruction to those students who are ready to read.  It incorporates writing, sounding out words and reading stories with interactive games and comprehension questions.  The children are being taught how to decode words which will help them with unfamiliar words and spelling skills.
Miss Leslie is giving Spanish lessons using the Rosetta Stone program and leads the students in short lessons at circle time.  Mrs. Wargo enjoys working with summer arts and crafts and has lots of great ideas for summer play and activities.
Our classroom is set up to follow the Montessori philosophy and principles – lessons on respect for the environment and people in our classroom, demonstrations daily on how we work with the materials on the shelves, Silence time is observed after the daily devotional and before the prayer time each morning and the adult’s role in the classroom is more of a facilitator than a traditional teacher.
Ms. Lin and Ms. Erna also incorporate many Montessori concepts in their toddler classroom during the summer months. They keep a consistent schedule to ensure the highest level of learning and engagement possible. Keeping this standard in every classroom is what gives every Day School student the confidence and drive to learn and achieve throughout their scholastic career.

Elementary
We are having a fantastic summer so far. Our Bible study is focused on the book of Galatians as well as a reading from Psalms each day. We continue with our math enrichment and mastery which includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problem solving. Linear measurement, volume capacity and metric weights are also incorporated in our daily mathematics lessons.
For our history studies we discussed the 200th anniversary of the war against England (June 18th, 1812). We are engaged in researching the proclivities of war. We are incorporating map-making and geography studies based around the anniversary of D-Day and other important dates from WWII.
Our science portion of class is exploding this summer. Students are continuing their study of archaeology (the human past) by examining physical evidence and creating hypotheses to be tested. Various time periods students are learning about include: the French fur trade of the Great Lakes, the Civil War and Late Victorian in the Midwest.
The summer class has also been introduced to the science of Paleontology (scientific study of fossils). The students examine fossils and create a scientific profile for each specimen. We are enjoying this daily curriculum and can not wait to see the ways students will excel because of it!
